Hidden deals distort market Disguised incentives skew property values as the paperwork no longer accurately reflects what buyers paid. James R. Hagerty and Michael Corkery / Wall Street Journal PARKER, Colo. -- As the housing market slump deepens, disguised discounts are making it harder to tell exactly how much people are paying for homes. Buyers, sellers and other market participants typically monitor fluctuating home values through sale records that legally have to be listed with county clerks. But incentives offered to buyers -- ranging from free cars or furniture to cash rebates -- are making those prices less reliable as a sign of what buyers actually paid, netting out the giveaways. And that may be misleading lenders and people shopping for homes, some real-estate lawyers and appraisers warn.

minazione e resistenza irakena
Red Falcon, Caradine, Vernon, Cecil, R.P.G. Alley, High Tension Road, and so forth. Few of the American soldiers knew how the locals referred to those same streets. When the hydraulic rear hatch of the Bradley opened, I saw Iraqi and American soldiers running here and there, shouting, guns drawn. I followed some soldiers into a house. In the kitchen, a young American in full combat gear was bending over a man who was lying face down on the floor. The soldier cursed as he struggled to tie the mans hands behind his back with plastic handcuffs. A couple of half-eaten plates of food were on a table, along with a mobile phone, which rang repeatedly. In an adjacent room, another prone man was being trussed. A teen-age Iraqi, the younger brother of the two men, entered the kitchen and began to object; the American soldier handcuffed him as well.
Bush Pushing Congress on Stimulus Plan
Democrats there want such things as an unemployment benefits extension, an increase in home heating subsidies or higher food stamp benefits. Bush suggested they could derail the whole effort, and he warned against it. "While I understand the desire to add provisions from both the left and the right, it would be a mistake to undermine this important bipartisan agreement," the president said. "By working together, we can provide our economy with a shot in the arm when we need it most." Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said Saturday: "The White House's cooperation with Congress in recent days is long, long overdue. And it's encouraging. But let's hope it is habit-forming." But Dorgan, delivering the Democrats' weekly radio address, added: "We need to do so much, much more.

The Bell report on Ski Sunday, part two
Hi everyone, here's what's coming up on Ski Sunday this week (27 January, 1900-2000, BBC Two and BBC Sport website) and all the latest news from the slopes. So another year goes by and still Bode Miller is without his Hahnenkamm downhill win. Miller was lying in joint first with Mario Scheiber when Didier Cuche pushed them back into second. On camera, their reactions could not have been more different, Scheiber, who had skied the best run of his life shrugged it off with a smile, Miller stomped off. For Miller a win on the Hahnenkamm would mean more than Olympic or World Championship golds. What was worse for Miller is that he would have won comfortably if he had not run into the net at the foot of the Steilhang. In typical Miller style he managed to get both skis up onto the safety nets, yet still not lose too much speed.
