We're evolving ...

Greg Palkot of the rightwing Fox News channel can't claim to share a postcode with the Muslim cleric, but he did interview him a couple of years back, which is enough to qualify him to write a piece reminiscing on his encounter. Palkot explains that Mr Hamza is 'not the sort of guy you want to spend an afternoon with', and discusses the dilemma he faced: 'How do you make small talk with an alleged terrorist?' If you're more interested in the legal side of Mr Hamza's case, both the Times and the Independent carry pieces explaining how the 'fast track' Anglo-American extradition treaty could work in Mr Hamza's case.

Chasing Perfection (It ain't over yet)

It has been a wild year for Bill Belichick's club. They were punished by the NFL for cheating after a win over the New York Jets in Week 1 and since that time, they have been on a mission.

After a busy off-season the Pats upgraded their passing attack and the results have been impressive. The combination of Pro Bowl starters Tom Brady and Randy Moss has been outstanding. Brady was named The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year and also broke Peyton Manning's single season TD pass record (click here for the Brady TD Pass Tracker) and Moss broke Jerry Rice's single season TD reception record. Now it's on to the playoffs.

Your Comments : Minister warns lax teachers

Teacher's will teach each student equally, then it is up to student and parents to ensure that they fulfill the obligation to the learning process.

Bottom line any student has the ability to learn, the problem is extricating their abilities.

humfree of Fiji (66 days and 2 hours ago) basically; the classes are to crowed and the learning environment needs improving. more effort on slow learnes is needed and transfering teachers will not solve these problems. regular workshops for teachers during part of the holidays should become a duty as well.

baloo of Fiji (66 days and 2 hours ago) what about those so called QAVA kids?? the types that dont want to learn at all just wasting their parents money and time???

Parent of special needs student of Fiji (66 days and 2 hours ago) Here's the main problem which the Ministry of Education is either oblivious to (jury still out on that) or avoiding because of a lack of advisors, resources and finances:

Teachers are not well trained to manage their large size classrooms with differentiated instructional design/learning.

Elbert: Ethanol's highs, lows make it top '07 biz story

Good news outweighed the bad for most Iowa businesses in 2007, with alternative energy leading the way. The Registers annual top 10 business stories are a reflection of that, with ethanol and wind energy laying claim to two of the top three positions on this years list.

Serious slowdown predicted for U.S. economy

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Serious slowdown, though not recession, was predicted for the U.S. economy on Saturday as political and business leaders were ready to wrap up their annual gathering at the Swiss skiing resort of Davos.

The World Economic Forum, which was kicked off here Wednesday, was clouded this year by mounting concern over the U.S. economic outlook in the aftermath of the sub-prime mortgage market crisis, with some economists even warning the U.S. economy is headed for a recession.

"Whatever the answer is on a recession, what is clear is there will be a serious slowdown" in the United States, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, managing director of the International Monetary Fund(IMF), said at a panel discussion on the economic outlook this year, calling for a serious response.

In Search of a Subprime Villain

The panic of 1869 had Jay Gould and Jim Fisk. The junk-bond insider scandals had Ivan Boesky and Mike Milken. And turn-of-the-21st century book-cooking had poster boys Jeff Skilling and Bernie Ebbers. Now, the subprime meltdown cries out for its own icon—an easily vilified, Leno-quotable, high-seven-figured household name.

If there were Vegas odds for this kind of thing, the money would be on Angelo Mozilo, founder and chief executive of Countrywide Financial (CFC), the largest U.S. mortgage lender and the source of so many of the bad home loans that have gummed up the global financial system.

But don't finger Mozilo just yet. The scale, ripple effect, and emotional particulars of this bust make it uniquely hard to pin on one character. Countrywide will become less newsworthy as it is acquired by Bank of America (BAC), an outcome regulators want to hasten.

Ingham's foreclosures second highest in state

That's an increase of 32.7 percent from September and 121.4 percent from October 2006. According to RealtyTrac, that comes to one filing for every 445 homes in the county.

There were 91 foreclosure filings in Eaton County in October, up 8.3 percent from September and 93.6 percent from October 2006. That amounted to a rate of one filing for every 496 homes in the county.

Far-ranging effects

Foreclosure rates such as those affect more than the families who are put out of homes, said Carrie Guzman, local financial justice coordinator for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), a national consumer advocacy group.

"Communities lose tax revenues. Tax revenues fund schools. That affects anybody who has kids," she said.
